12th Singapore Institute of Architects Architectural Design Awards Honours Excellence in Architecture

Singapore, 18 May 2012 – Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) announced the recipients of the 12th SIA Architectural Design Awards, the profession’s highest recognition of works that exemplify excellence in architectural design. Selected from 112 submissions, 22 recipients will be honoured on 18 May 2012 at the SIA 51st Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony to be held at Resorts World Convention Centre.

The SIA Architectural Design Awards is the most prestigious award conferred by SIA to promote and encourage distinction in architectural design. The Awards recognizes the achievements of SIA members in their pursuit of architectural excellence and motivates architects to push the boundaries with innovative solutions. SIA hopes to imbue architects with the relentless mindset of continually achieving greater heights, leading to the vision of Singapore architecture being acknowledged as world class standards. The Awards also aim to heighten the appreciation and patronage of good architectural design from both the architectural fraternity as well as the general public.

“We are pleased to see many quality projects this year. It is a sign that Singapore Architects are moving on to a higher arena and the Institute is heartened to witness such a progression” says SIA President, Mr Theodore Chan. Mr Ashvinkumar, Chairman for the Jury, added “The judging process is rigorous and the jury members spent hours deliberating on the projects after the site visits. The quality seen in the shortlisted projects exceeds our expectations and this is testimony to the very refined creativity that is evolving all the time within the profession.”

Submissions of the 12th SIA Architectural Design Awards are evaluated based on attributes such as originality and innovation, sensitivity to context, sustainability, response to climate, response to users’ needs and elegance of construction and detail; by a judging panel of industry professionals comprising:

-Mr Ashvinkumar (Imm Past President, Singapore Institute of Architects)
-Ms Fun Siew Leng (Group Director, Urban Redevelopment Authority)
-Mr Clifford Pearson (Deputy Editor, Architectural Records)
-Ar Saifuddin Bin Ahmad (President, Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia)
-Prof Wong Yunn Chii (Head, NUS Department of Architecture)

Moderator: Mr Laurence Liew (Chair, SIA Awards Committee / Director, DCA Architects)

12th SIA ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AWARDS

A total of 10 Design Awards and 12 Honourable Mentions are awarded in 6 categories. Of the 9 Design Awards, one project is award as the “Best Project Constructed under $1.5 Million” and two other projects as the “Building Of The Year”.

About SIA Architectural Design Awards

Organized by SIA, the SIA Architectural Design Awards is the most prestigious award implemented by SIA to promote and encourage excellence in architectural design. The intention is to recognize the efforts of SIA members in their pursuit of architectural excellence and innovative solutions. It is also aimed at heightening the appreciation and patronage of good architectural design from both the architectural fraternity as well as the general public. It is the Institute strategic intent that the Awards will motivate architects to strive for higher standards of architectural excellence and imbue with the relentless mindset of continually achieving great heights, leading to the vision of Singapore architecture being accepted as world class standards.

The Awards was inaugurated in 1983, in conjunction with an exhibition and conference under the theme, “The Role of the Singapore Architects in the 80s and Beyond”. Altogether 10 awards have been organized over the years as follows:

About Singapore Institute of Architects

The Singapore Institute of Architects is a professional organization established in 1961 with the objective to promote the architectural profession and the built environment in Singapore. The Institute is the sole representative for the architectural profession in Singapore. The Institute’s vision is to develop Singapore as an Architecture Capital.

Our mission is to champion for excellence in architecture and the built environment. This mission is driven by four key strategic thrusts, namely Design, Practice, Education and Enterprise.

The management of the affairs of the Institute is the responsibility of an elected Council, comprising 20 members. Of which 6 of them are Office Bearers, who are collectively responsible for the administration and financial matters of the Institute.
