Sunset Place House
Category A: Residential Projects (Alterations & Additions to Residential Housing)
Client / Owner: Ms Liew Ling Lih
A walk through the house is an endless journey of delightful surprises, even at such a modest scale. From outside, one’s attention is immediately captured by the house in raw concrete, featuring a grassy porch-roof. The house shows that concrete still is a material for the ages.
Essentially, a concrete shell is grafted over partially preserved brickwalls of the original. The preserved brickwalls are as functional as they are expressive. The rustic combination has an architectonic richness. The concrete structures layer over the original parts of the house to create wonderfully tactile spaces in the form of a sheltered patio, balconies and a semi outdoor shower.
Inside the house which retained its original “half-landing” configuration, spaces flow one into another, revealing glimpses of textural combinations in concrete, brick and timber, especially when bathed in daylight from skylights.
The jury told the owners they are fortunate to live in such an amazing house, which they accord Building of The Year award.
