Zaans Medical Centre: a place to feel better

Delft – June 22, 2017 – Zaans Medical Centre, designed by Mecanoo architecten, is the first lean hospital in the Netherlands. It is an efficient and compact building in which professional healthcare and a personal approach strengthen each other. Clear routing, an abundance of daylight, and positive distractions contribute to an environment in which promotes wellbeing.
The clear stacking of two floors of outpatient clinics, two floors of clinical departments and a flexible facility layer between them, optimally serves the primary care processes. All departments are designed to prevent any form of waste. Whenever possible, the outpatient clinics and nursing departments are standardised, allowing for exchangeability and adaptability. The Zaans Medical Centre is therefore efficient, flexible and future-proof.

The patient experience played a crucial role in the design process. Positive distractions can reduce the stress of a hospital visit and advance recovery. The spacious multi-storey lobby has the feel of a welcoming public building. Semi-circular voids and skylights, the use of wood, bright colours, good acoustics and unobstructed views of the surroundings provide a pleasant atmosphere. Hand-drawn illustrations on walls, glazed partitions, and lifts refer to the industrial heritage of the Zaan region. A special spiral slide offers children an adventurous way to travel between levels.
“Zaans Medical Centre is the first Mecanoo-designed hospital: from architecture to urban plan, and from landscape to interior,” says creative director Francine Houben. “In the integral design, we have built upon our extensive experience with public buildings and visitor experience. The result is a serene, alluring environment that touches all the senses. It does not feel like a hospital, but as a place you would like to be.”
Adjacent to the Zaans Medical Center lies a health boulevard with a rehabilitation hotel, a pharmacy, eye clinic, various shops, a supermarket and a parking garage, designed to function as a small town. The smart combination of the medical centre and related healthcare services results in a health district for Zaandam and the region.
The hospital was developed by the Zaans Medical Centre and Vitaal ZorgVast, and constructed by BAM, within time and budget. SILO Agency designed the illustrations and environmental graphics. The building is BREEAM Very Good certified.

Programme: 38,500 m2 hospital with acute centre (8 operating rooms), intensive care unit, cardiac care unit, outpatient clinics, theme centres according to the shop-in-shop principle (such as pain centre, exercise centre, Esperanz, cardiovascular centre), diagnostic centre, day care centre, hospitals (137 beds) with separate mother-child centre, laboratory, pharmacy, public functions, offices and meeting centre for the ZMC Academy and the parking garage for 700 vehicles.

Zaans Medisch Centrum is het eerste lean-ziekenhuis in Nederland. Het is een efficiënt en compact gebouw waarin gezond worden en gezond blijven centraal staat. Professionele zorg en kleinschaligheid versterken elkaar. Architectuur, stedenbouw, landschap en interieur zijn samengebracht in een integraal ontwerp. Veel daglicht, heldere routes en positieve afleiding dragen bij aan omgeving die niet als een ziekenhuis voelt, maar als een plek waar je je beter kan voelen.
Lean en toekomstbestendig
Het slimme lean-ontwerp identificeert vijf zorgprocessen: acuut, electief, polikliniek, kliniek en diagnostiek. Door de heldere stapeling van twee verdiepingen met poliklinieken, twee verdiepingen met klinische afdelingen en daartussen een flexibele facilitaire laag worden deze primaire zorgprocessen optimaal gefaciliteerd. De verschillende afdelingen zijn ontworpen om elke vorm van verspilling te voorkomen. De poliklinieken en verpleegafdelingen zijn zoveel mogelijk gestandaardiseerd en schakel- en uitwisselbaar. Het Zaans Medisch Centrum is hierdoor flexibel en toekomstbestendig.
Positieve afleiding
De beleving van de patiënt speelde een cruciale rol in het ontwerpprocess. Positieve afleiding kan de stress van een ziekenhuisbezoek verminderen en het herstel bevorderen. De ruime lobby over meerdere verdiepingen heeft de uitstraling van een publiek gebouw waarin je je welkom voelt. Halfronde vides en daklichten, veel hout, frisse kleuren, goede akoestiek en uitzicht op de omgeving zorgen voor een prettige sfeer. Alle afdelingen zijn met elkaar verbonden door een binnenstraat met veel beschutte wachtplekken. Aan beide uiteinden van de straat ligt een groene patio. De handgetekende illustraties op muren, glaswanden en in liften refereren aan de industriële geschiedenis van de Zaanstreek. De spiraalglijbaan biedt kinderen een avontuurlijke manier om naar beneden te gaan.
Gezondheidswijk
Naast het Zaans Medisch Centrum ligt de Zorgboulevard met onder meer een revalidatiehotel, apotheek, oogkliniek, diverse winkels, een supermarkt en een parkeergarage. Het geheel is als een klein stadje ontworpen. Door de slimme samenwerking is een gezondheidswijk voor Zaandam en omstreken ontstaan. Het ziekenhuis is ontwikkeld door het Zaans Medisch Centrum in een Alliantie met Vitaal ZorgVast en binnen tijd en budget gerealiseerd door BAM. SILO Agency ontwierp de grafiek. Het gebouw is BREEAM Very Good gecertificeerd.
