Hatlehol Church Norway : Architecture Information + Images

Mar 2009

Young Danish architects Cornelius + Vöge has won a large international competition on a new church in Norway. Among 123 competitors from all over Europe the project was announced as the winner.

The church is placed in the town of Hatlehol in Aalesund near the west coast of Norway. It will be situated in a beautiful landscape of fjords and mountains. Nature plays an important part in the project.

The church is shaped as abstractions of the rocks and mountains in the landscape and integrated skylights and a bell tower rises as an impressive landmark. The building is shaped by the rain water and existing rocks in the landscape. Rocks is being integrated inside the building as baptistery.

And rain water is being collected in smaller ponds around the building blocks and leaded by the natural settings of the terrain to an existing stream. The building is in concrete and integrated furniture and facadeelements of local pinewood. The exterior is cladded with a bright local slate.

For more than 40 years they have been collecting for the new church with community facilities in Hatlehol, and finally it seems to be close to reality.
