Birmingham Buildings : Architecture
Key Property Developments in the West Midlands, central England, UK
Birmingham Architecture
We've selected what we feel are the key examples of Birmingham Architecture. We aim to include West Midlands Buildings that are either of top quality or interesting, or ideally both.
We cover completed Birmingham buildings, new building designs and architectural exhibitions. We also post architecture competitions across the West Midlands. The focus is on contemporary Midlands buildings but information on traditional architecture is also welcome.

Grand Hotel Birmingham - 20 Apr 2012
After 11 years of dereliction the council and locals feared for the future of this landmark hotel until, in 2010, Hortons’ Estates commissioned Berman Guedes Stretton to design a scheme that would rescue the hotel and restore it to its former glory. The scheme, strongly supported by English Heritage, has sailed through the planning process. Councillor Barry Henley said, "I must congratulate the architect.

RIBA Award winner, 2011
This is a single storey lightweight structure perched over A& E and the fracture clinic. It is situated in a busy and chaotic part of the town, cut off by roads and surrounded by hospital buildings with different dates, styles and looks all embracing one other.
The design has achieved an oasis of peace and calm while still meeting the very specific and stringent requirements set by the NHS. The attention to details and to colours is quite remarkable.
The Cube

The Cube Birmingham
This building is a new landmark destination building in a rapidly regenerating district of central Birmingham. It marks a key moment in Birmingham’s development: the first of a new phase of visionary buildings which will build on the work of Future System’s Selfridges building and pave the way for Mecanoo’s Library of Birmingham and Foreign Office Architects’ New Street station.
Comprising offices, parking, apartments, retail units, a hotel, spa, restaurant and “sky bar”, The Cube was conceived as a building which would never close.
Zero Carbon House
Architect: John Christophers

Zero Carbon House
This is not for the architecturally faint-hearted. John Christophers has transformed an existing end of terrace house into a ground-breaking carbon-neutral family home of rare quality using low energy materials and environmental systems. It is thought to be the UK’s first retrofit to achieve level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes – seven years ahead of the government’s target date
The project involved the conversion and extension of a two bedroom redbrick semi-detached Victorian house into a four bedroom dwelling with a studio loft.
