Millennium Tower Tokyo
Location: Tokyo Bay, in the ocean off the coast of Japan
Design date: 1989
Design: Foster + Partners
The Millennium Tower in Tokyo presented a timely solution to the social challenges of vast urban expansion and the mixed-use vertical city demonstrated that high-density living can lead to an improved quality of life. Located in a region notorious for hurricane-strength wind forces and earthquakes, the tower’s conical structure, with its helical steel cage, is inherently stable.
Antenna spire height: 840 m (2,760 ft)
Roof height: 840 m (2,760 ft)
Architect: Foster + Partners
Developer: Obayashi Corporation
This 170-floor cone-shaped skyscraper building in Tokyo Bay was envisioned by celebrated British architect Sir Norman Foster in 1989.
The tower shape is aerodynamic to reduce wind stress, as hurricane-strength winds can be experienced here.
Helical bands wrap around the tower for structural support due to frequent earthquakes in the area.
Steel tanks at the top of the tower are filled with water, and can be rotated as a counterweight against wind.
