Woods Bagot’s California-inspired Design Establishes New Standard in Premium Travel

Los Angeles—Global design and consulting firm Woods Bagot has designed the new Los Angeles Business Lounge for international airlines Qantas, Cathay Pacific and British Airways at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The lounge establishes a new standard in luxury travel with a setting inspired by California and the host airlines’ unique premium offerings.

Qantas New Business Lounge

Located in LAX’s recently completed Tom Bradley International Terminal, the Business Lounge is a centerpiece of Qantas’ plans to quadruple its presence at the airport. Its design takes advantage of a large central atrium to provide customers with a broad choice of amenities and ambience enhanced with daylight and views. When completed in early 2015, the lounge will seat 600 travelers.

Choice and comfort are defining elements of the Business Lounge. Customers can dine on the sun-filled interior “deck” overlooking the atrium, join others around the fireplace in the den, or relax privately in a classic Eames lounge chair. Dining is centered around a more active “street” where customers can enjoy menus influenced by Los Angeles’ multicultural cuisines, including dishes served from food carts inspired by the city’s street food culture.

A full-service cocktail bar and shower suites complete the current offering. Upon completion of the lounge early next year, it will include a formal dining experience, workstations, a family zone and additional shower suites.

An elegant backdrop of light and dark wood, stone and textiles and a locally inspired polished plaster “ribbon” wall weaving through the space, tie the varied settings into a singular experience. Color accents and contemporary furnishings, including iconic pieces designed in Los Angeles, enhance the connection to the region.

Tamara White, Woods Bagot’s San Francisco-based interior design principal, said: “We wanted customers to feel at home while also enjoying what makes California special. By combining signature elements from each airline within a design that subtly reflects California, we’ve created an experience that provides customers with both a sense of place and touch points of familiarity unique to each airline.”

Qantas International CEO, Simon Hickey, said: “The new Los Angeles Business Lounge is proof of our ongoing investment in our product to ensure we provide the best travel experience possible for our customers when they are on the ground and in the air.”

Woods Bagot’s collaboration with Qantas spans almost two decades in Australia and the Asia Pacific region and a range of domestic and international lounges including Qantas Club, Business and First Lounges. White relocated to the firm’s San Francisco studio in 2013 to serve global clients in North America.
