Shortlist announced for Great Places Lakes & Dales Partnership (GPLD) flexible housing competition

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is pleased to announce the six architecture practices shortlisted to participate in phase 2 of the Great Places Lakes and Dales Partnership (GPLD) flexible housing competition which seeks flexible housing designs for two sites within the GPLD area.

GPLD is a partnership of Craven District Council (lead authority), South Lakeland District Council, Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, and Lake District National Park Authority.

In March, competitors were invited to submit concepts designs for 2 rural sites within the area. Designs were assessed anonymously by the evaluation panel and three schemes were selected for each site.

The 3 shortlisted teams for the Horton-in-Ribblesdale site are:

• McGinlay Bell
• McMullan Studio
• Patalab Architecture

The 3 shortlisted teams for the Burneside site are:

• Hawkins Brown
• Outpost with Giles Miller Studio
• Weston Williamson + Partners

Richard Dowson, consultant with Great Place, said: “We were delighted with the level of interest and the quality of submissions in the competition, which goes to show how important the issue of rural housing is, not just to the Lakes and Dales, but across the UK and beyond.

“It was a tough job for the judging panel to choose the shortlisted three for each site but we are confident that we have exceptionally high quality finalists and are looking forward to seeing their worked-up designs.”

RIBA launches flexible housing competition for Great Places Lakes & Dales Partnership (GPLD)

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is pleased to launch a design competition on behalf the Great Places Lakes and Dales Partnership (GPLD). The competition seeks flexible housing designs for two sites within the GPLD area.

The competition is looking to attract architects from around the world who can bring innovative thinking to flexible housing, specifically designed to appeal to younger people and draw them to the area. Although the GPLD area economy is relatively strong, like many rural areas it suffers from an outward migration of young people. The area has 44% fewer people aged 16-34 than the national average, which raises significant concerns regarding the future resilience of the communities and economy.

Phase 1 submissions will be evaluated anonymously, and concepts should be cognisant of the surrounding areas, showing sensitivity to context and local distinctiveness. Competitors can either submit proposals for one or both locations. The RIBA Competitions evaluation panel will include Sasha Bhavan of KnoxBhavan Architects as the RIBA Adviser, Wayne Hemingway of Hemingway Design and Nathan Cornish of Urban Splash.

Sasha Bhavan, RIBA Adviser said: “This competition offers a unique opportunity to encourage the return of young people back to the rural communities of the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District in conjunction with art, culture and heritage initiatives.”

Richard Dowson, consultant with Great Place: Lakes and Dales said: “We are looking for innovative design and a greater offer for younger generations. It’s about housing that will appeal to returners and young people already living in the area. Affordability and innovation are key strands to the concept.”

The initial phase of the competition will require teams to submit designs anonymously, in digital format only. Up to six concept designs (three for each site) will then be shortlisted for further development during the second phase. Each shortlisted designer will receive an honorarium of £4,000 + VAT.

The closing date for first stage entries is 14:00 Wednesday 24th April 2019.

Great Place: Lakes and Dales
Great Place: Lakes and Dales is one of 16 pilot projects in England funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England and is focused on the rural corridor linking Skipton in the south and Grasmere in the north, including the market towns and rural hinterlands, extending into both the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks.

The programme is managed via the Consortium of Partnership Organisations, which is made up of additional funding partners including Craven District Council (lead authority), South Lakeland District Council, Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and Lake District National Park Authority. A Creative Board, which includes additional cultural organisations, manages the strategic delivery.

The programme is funded from August 2017 – March 2020 and its main purpose is to understand the reasons for fewer 16 to 34-year olds than the national average living and working in the area and seek to address them, using arts, heritage and culture as the catalyst for economic, social and environmental change.
