The Borusan Music & Art House is a contemporary urban renovation project located on a pedestrian street in the historic Beyoğlu district of Istanbul Istiklal Caddesi. The area is characterized by late Ottoman era structures from the 19th & 20th centuries. The Borusan Music & Art House was originally referred to as the French Apartment, and was one of many retail and residential buildings lining this busy avenue. In Ottoman times, Istiklal Caddesi was a popular destination for intellectuals and local Italian and French residents.

The vision for the Borusan Music & Art House originated with Borusan Holding, understanding the potential for a project of this nature, and the role it might play in the city given the unique nature and location of the site. Borusan Music & Art House primarily functions as a rehearsal venue for the Borusan Istanbul Philarmonic Orchestra, but the intention is to promote a much more fluid interraction with the public, for what is traditionally a private event. Thus, the building opens itself up to the street, and the street level lobby with art installations invites the public into the building. There is also a mezzanine level where guests may view the philharmonic orchestra from the gallery floor without disturbing the musicians.

The design preserves and restores the historic shell of the existing building, which is typical of the facades along the famous Istiklal Caddesi. The building core has been completely removed, expressing an empty void. A contemporary “box” is inserted within the core. The “box” is designed using a lightweight steel dia-grid frame system along its perimeter. This strategy allows for an open floor plan, and offers programmatic flexibility between all the floors. The architectural symbiosis of the two contrasting construction methods and materials activates a playful tension between the past and present.
