Steven Alan Portland Store Building
Designed by Hollwich Kushner (HWKN) as a prototype for future Steven Alan locations in Atlanta, Chicago and Dallas, the Portland store imbues a local character to a modular design.
New York, NY. – Building on his reputation for scouting the most intriguing young designers, Steven Alan turned to Hollwich Kushner (HWKN) to envision a national expansion beyond the 20 existing retail locations in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Connecticut. Each location carries an eclectic mix of the full Steven Alan collection, alongside pioneering designers of clothing, handbags and other accessories. The unique chemistry of the brand led HWKN to develop an architecture that can be tailored to each unique space.
“The design is bold, appropriately flexible and modest yet rustic. And all of this was achieved through a truly flexible system that allows us to meet all of our functional goals,” says Steven Alan. “The new series of stores that Hollwich Kushner has designed for Steven Alan creates a template, which allows us to showcase from our favorite designers around the world.”

The launch of Steven Alan’s first collection in 1999, created a loyal brand following enamored by the casual, smart, self-assured essentials the store carries for both men and women. The brand’s national expansion marks a new era for Steven Alan by tapping into influential markets around the country including Portland, OR, Atlanta, GA, Chicago, IL, and Dallas, TX.
“The design challenge was to create something completely modular for a national roll out, but capable of reflecting the local character of each store’s location.” Explains Marc Kushner, partner Hollwich Kushner (HWKN). “We found the answer in locally sourced wood. In the Portland store, all of the millwork is made of Redwood. In Chicago and Atlanta we chose Douglas Fir, and the Dallas store uses Southern Pine.”
The store’s design is a celebration of raw materials and mechanical connections. Thick steel brackets are used to connect locally sourced lumber. The system of standardized shelving is infinitely flexible to show off products both large and small. The combination of cubbies, racks, shelves and counters offer on-demand closed and open storage and can be customized for each season’s products.
“All of the key design elements are crafted from raw wood without the typical retail glossiness,” says Matthias Hollwich. “This allows the products to unfold all of their personality and not be overpowered by a sterile or over-stylized environment.”
The store is designed to be a friendly and comfortable place to shop. The wall units hinge around the perimeter of the store to attract attention and keep the center open and unintimidating. Lighting is aligned to showcases in the center of the space.
Steven Alan Portland is located at 1029 SW Stark Street and is open daily from 11a-7p.
