The site, located atop the Eola hills near Salem, Oregon, boasts views of gorgeous mountains and the city of Salem to the east, and rolling hills and wine country to the west. When low clouds descend over the valley in the morning, the house appears to be on top of the world. The client’s brief was simple, create a comfortable home for their family – a couple with two young children and two German Shepherds.

Porous House is the second project of a series initiated by Malaspina Design, a prominent firm specializing in sustainable housing design based in Oregon, USA, under the leadership of Gerardo Pandal. The design for the house was commissioned to FRPO Rodriguez & Oriol, a Madrid-based design practice led by architects Pablo Oriol and Fernando Rodríguez, to venture into blending Pacific Northwest dream home aesthetics with modern architecture.

Sited at the rim of the Columbia River Gorge within the existing Sagecliffe Winery hospitality campus, the Cave B Cabins maximise connections to the surrounding natural context. Each cabin features a durable, low-maintenance material palette of steel, concrete and plywood that allows the structure to fade into the rocky landscape of eastern Washington’s high desert.

The Salem Public Library’s downtown location was due for a renovation to bring its structural resilience and building systems up to modern standards. The 96,000-square-foot concrete structure was originally designed by in 1970 by San Francisco architect George Rockrise with Salem architect of record Donald Richardson and built in 1972.

First planned in the early 1970s, the Ranch is a vacation destination for many, and a year-round home for some. The new 15,000-sqft “Lakeside” replaces the well-worn main pool facility and revives the “heart” of the Ranch.

The home largely avoided any detrimental renovations over the years and proved to be a time capsule with many original details intact, including the kitchen and bathrooms.
