University of St Andrews New Arts Faculty Building : Scottish Design Awards 2007 - Public Building Shortlist: Reiach and Hall Architects NEW ARTS FACULTY BUILDING for University of St Andrew's photo © Paul Zanre Literally completed weeks ago and won through competitive interview our new Arts Faculty building is the first significant addition to the University's historic town centre campus in over 30 years. The new building accommodates the Department of International Relations, smaller research groups in academic offices, seminar rooms and social spaces located within the existing historic town centre Arts Faculty campus. images © Reiach and Hall Architects The new building sits next to the 4 storey University Main Library and postgraduate departments housed in a substantial Victorian townhouse. Images © Reiach and Hall Architects The library, built in the 1970's, occupies a position that might have been expected to be an open court or quadrangle and the resultant open space in front of the library is poorly defined. The new Arts Faculty building 'repairs' the currently unsatisfactory urban diagram and with the cloistered, social open forum on the ground floor brings life and community to a central hub of the University.
