Active Glass Curtain Wall: Intelliglass Architectural Glazing

World’s first active glass curtain wall

Cuenca, September 8th 2010: Today in Spain, the first building with a “Radiaglass” curtain wall will put in service, that is the first active glass curtain wall building in the world. This building, located at Rodolfo Llopis street, will house multipurpose classrooms for the Cuenca campus of the University of Castilla-La Mancha.

Radiaglass technology has been developed by Intelliglass S.L., a spin-off technology company from the Madrid Politecnica University, that allows the circulation of a water layer inside a triple glass, blocking a significant part of the suns radiation and creating a controlled thermal envelope.

The resulting effect is a transparent glass wall that significantly reduces the heat from the sun coming through without the need for traditional curtains that limit our view of our environment. The problems of Glass Architecture, the lack of comfort and the huge energy needs to control climate internally, are solved with the use of this inexpensive new technology.

In this building, the Radiaglass active curtain wall uses geothermal energy to dissipate the solar radiation in the summertime; producing a savings of up to 70% for the inside air conditioning consumption. In the wintertime, also using geothermal energy, the circulating water is tempered, and so the leaks of energy and the needs of heating are greatly reduced.

The Radiaglass active curtain wall installed in Cuenca is 15 meters high by 10 meters wide, and this is just a sample of the ground-breaking technology by Intelliglass, which lends itself to brand new buildings or to upgrade existing buildings using the new glass curtain walls.

Thanks to this technology, air conditioning will be from now on, silent, invisible, without the need of air flow and much more energy efficient, not to mention how this technology will enhance our ability to maintain a view and efficiently preserve our delicate environment.

Intelliglass team of architects and engineers have developed this revolutionary product that provides an economical, eco-friendly and sustainable solution to the glass architecture problems.
