Arctic Culture Centre
Address: Hammerfest, Norway
Completion: In progress
Client: The Municipality of Hammerfest Council represented in collaboration
with Hammerfest Næringsinvest AS, and Hammerfest Havnevesen
KF (Harbor Authority)
Area: 5000 m2
A-lab won the international competition for the Hammerfest Arctic Culture
Centre in august 2004 and it constitutes one of the main projects in the
office.
The competition site is highly visible from both land and sea and constitutes
a total area of ca. 9000 m2 with a sea front of ca. 300m.

The goal is to provide this seaside area with new program functions and
architectural characteristics, ensuring a beautiful, atractive town centre
and contributing to the development and strengthening of the towns
identity.
The building will be Hammerfests main living room, a
public and social scene for all.
The functions in the building are grouped in compact units and organized
in such a way that in-between spaces with different levels of access are
created, and the numbers of public related areas are maximized. These
social scenes, both indoors and outdoors, attach the Culture
Centre to the city of Hammerfest.
The building is an object with a clear signal effect whereas accessibility,
openness and creative, artistic energy is expressed.
The ACC will also be the first building on the Findus site (waterfront),
and will thus importantly condition further development and redevelopment
of the relationship between Hammerfest town center and the sea.
