Aoki Jun Appointed Director of Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art

Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art, formerly known by Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art is pleased to announce the appointment of the architect Aoki Jun as its new director, effective April 1. Aoki also has been deeply involved in the Museum renewal project since its earliest design stage.

Founded in 1933, the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art is known as Japan’s oldest public art museum housed in its original building, and its classical visage has been highly appreciated for 85 years. However, the aging building’s renovation has been long awaited at the same time. In proceeding the renewal project, the museum has adopted the innovative plan co-designed by two leading Japanese architects: Aoki Jun and Nishizawa Tezzo among open call proposals.

The new building will not only enhance the public space by adding cafe, lobby and shops, but also add on an annex dedicated to contemporary art exhibition. Also, in order to minimize the financial burden on citizens, they sold the naming rights and signed a fifty-year contract with KYOCERA Corporation. The new museum is scheduled to return as Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art in Spring 2020 after three-year absence.
