BDP has won an international competition to design a new business district in a key strategic transportation location in Shanghai.

The Hongqiao business district, for client Golden Kingdom, will comprise 350,000 sq m of office, retail and landscape within close proximity to Shanghai’s main railway station and its main domestic airport. It is approximately 17km from Pudong, the existing business district in Shanghai, and will create an environment which is very different in character being a low rise development with a maximum of eight storeys.

The new development is part of a flexible mixed use, mixed density masterplan which allows for future growth and encourages innovation. Key drivers in the design are the natural and climatic assets of the site and location, and their optimisation in creating sustainable design solutions.

BDP’s design follows the principle of ‘creating places for people’ and carves up a large urban block into a human scale development taking into account pedestrian flow, natural light and wind paths. Office accommodation is placed around the edge of the development, with the commercial spaces at street level toward the centre to create a dynamic entertainment focus where interaction can take place.

BDP is architect and specialist services which include sustainability, acoustics, landscape, lighting and structural engineer for the project which is expected to start on site in September this year.

The future Linkong Economic Park is favourably located within the Great Hongqiao Business Zone which lies adjacent to Hongqiao Transportation Hub and in proximity to Hongqiao Airport and Shanghai’s city centre. The Great Hongqiao Business Zone enjoys access to the Transportation Hub’s high speed rail, subway and airport transportation systems and benefits from the nearby airport’s attraction for global and local enterprises wishing to settle down in the region.

This major new sustainable masterplan for a prominent site at the heart of the Shanghai Hongqiao CBD, has broken ground. The project forms part of a large-scale urban plan, extending from Shanghai’s main station. The dynamic new mixed-use community is centred on a new four-hectare public park and brings together highly efficient, flexible office buildings, animated at ground level by shops, restaurants and a range of new civic spaces.
