Concerning urbanistic planning, the law courts of Caen redefines a new domain in the centre of the City. The design of BE Hauvette Paris and Atelier d’Architecture Pierre Champenois for this public building was recently presented to the public. It comes with a quadratic shape which comprises several duties and responsibilities: The cube underlines by its form the importance of jurisdiction by the means of architecture.

The project is a winning entry of an international competition. The building is a graft in the complexity of the Venetian urban system facing Piazzale Roma, the car-entrance space to the city of Venice. At the same time it becomes the ‘infrastructure’ which brings an existing 19th century complex factory (Ex-Manifattura Tabacchi) to a contemporary use: in fact it houses the the technological systems serving the whole.

Leers Weinzapfel Associates’ Taunton Trial Court in Taunton, MA, is the recipient of a 2012 American Institute of Architecture/Academy of Architecture for Justice (AIA/AAJ) Justice Facilities Review (JFR) Program Award of Excellence Merit, an accolade it also received in 2008 for its US District Courthouse in Orlando.

The courthouse building is located on a newly designed main public square in the city center of Jerusalem. The building houses all the judiciary levels except the Supreme Court, and contains 113 courtrooms and 135 judges’ chambers. The design of the court building connects and bridges among the host of diverse design languages of the buildings around it while creating a distinctive language of its own.

The main concept pertaining to the functional plan of this Law Courts building is expressed in the systematic approach, which regards the structure as a “law factory.” The functional effectiveness surpasses considerations related to prestige or status.
