Florence High Speed Railway Station building
New Railway Station Building in Florence
As part of the creation of a new high-speed rail network, the Italian Government has instituted a major programme of station restructuring, including the creation of many new stations. The design for Florence Station provides a new facility that will connect with the citys existing Santa Maria Novella station via a new tramline.
Co-architects: Lancietti Passaleva Giordo and Associates

In September 2002 Arup together with Foster + Partners won an international competition to design a new station in Florence for high speed trains.
Located at the heart of the city’s historic centre, this is Arup’s largest and most complex transport building project in Italy. It will be a crucial interchange node as well as a vital new hub for Florence, and has attracted attention for its iconic value and relationship with its prestigious surroundings.
Arup has developed the structural and building services design and provided all specialist engineering, including geotechnics, fire, seismic design, transportation, security and risk consulting, façade, access and maintenance, acoustics, construction planning and project management.
This is the first deep structure designed by Arup in Italy. The concourse is intended to be a vibrant public space with a shopping arcade under an overarching steel and glass roof.
