RIBA Awards 2012 Citation:

Easton Neston Estate, Northamptonshire

Easton Neston is one of the finest country houses in England, designed by Hawksmoor with an adjacent wing by Wren. Unsympathetic additions and a fire in 2002 meant there was much for the new owners and their architects to address. The historic setting clarified and repairs completed, attention turned to the sensitive incorporation of modern facilities to meet the needs of the Client’s domestic and business requirements (which required the incorporation of his fashion studios and workshops).

This has clearly been a labour of love for the past seven years, to return a wonderful piece of architecture to its former glory. The project has not only demanded a deep understanding of traditional craft, but also the ability to reconcile the demands of conservation with those of contemporary life.

A dramatic new classical building has been added to the Northampton skyline. Commissioned by St Andrew’s Healthcare, the 20,000 plus square metre hospital unit is probably the largest single building in the classical style to be built for 50 years.

The new residential, mental-health facility was designed by well-known classical architect Robert Adam of ADAM Architecture working closely with health-building experts, Oxford Architects.
