Derriford Masterplan

International architectural practice S333 Architecture + Urbanism has revealed its designs for the first phase of their masterplan to create a new urban centre in Derriford, North Plymouth, called Bircham Park. More than 300 people attended an open day and viewed plans for the project. Responses to proposals were overwhelmingly favourable, especially from the City’s design committee. A detailed application for the first phase has been made and it is expected to start work after planning in early 2009.

In June 2007 S333 won an invited competition to lead the regeneration of Derriford’s Northwest Quadrant and to design a masterplan for the area. Selected by Wharfside Regeneration and working alongside Plymouth Hospital Trust, S333 have worked up a detailed masterplan for the 16 acre site that sits opposite Derriford Hospital. The brief was to create an inspirational new heart for Derriford that would become a place where people will meet, live, play and work. The first phase of the scheme is a transferium ‘ a unique new building that combines a multi-storey car park with a nursery school and associated retail space.

Dominic Papa of S333 comments;

‘The masterplan for Bircham Park seeks a quality of ambition for public space and mixed use development for Derriford’s Northwest Quadrant. The transferium is the first phase and a key part of the new front door to Plymouth Hospital. Car parks must be seen as important public spaces in our cities and therefore we have approached the project in much the same way as one would a public park; a landscape of mixed uses, with shops, cafes, a nursery garden and public terraces.”

Speaking on behalf of Wharfside Regeneration (Devon) Limited, John Oxley comments;

‘A positive relationship with S333 has created an exciting proposal that complies with the City’s brief for a new ‘heart’ to the area with residential, retail and care related uses as well as car parking and extensive landscaping. S333 have designed a high quality car park to be in sympathy with the remainder of the development, specifically in relation to the needs of Derriford Hospital.’

The multi-storey car park provides 627 spaces for parking, bicycles and motorbikes totalling nearly 20,000 m2. S333 carefully positioned the car park entrance as closely to the hospital as possible ensuring direct and safe links for pedestrians, as well as convenient drop off points for patients arriving at Derriford Hospital. Also part of the building will be a children’s nursery school, including rooftop play area that overlooks the new High Street created by the master plan. On ground level there will be three commercial units totalling 670m2.

– Transferium, a Dutch term to describe a multi-functional transport intersection has been used by S333 to describe the new building.
