Now in its fifth year, the ceremony will be held in Dubai on the 10th May at the charming Palazzo Versace Hotel, and is universally recognised as one of the most iconic award events in the industry. The panel of judges consisting of professionals and experts who select the finalists each year, favour the most innovative and “visionary” concepts in the retail & leisure segment from all over the world.

Having won “Designer of the Year” in 2013, it is a great honour for the practice to have been shortlisted for the award again in 2017, and to be recognised for its consistent and accurate delivery of design and value for brands.

Silicon Mall, the new flagship shopping centre of LuLu Group International, has gained Design International another shortlist spot, in the Future Projects category. This important project has just celebrated the laying of the foundation stone on the site, in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of Dubai Silicon Oasis. The new mall will become the gateway to the Dubai Silicon Oasis, the ‘Smart City’, overlooking the Emirates Road and Al Ain Road. Located in an area that is facing rapid growth in Dubai, which houses world class facilities and is home to more than 700 high tech companies, institutions, hotels, business parks and residential communities.

The revolutionary design of the new Silicon Mall resembles five gigantic pebble like shapes. Inspired by ancient Arabian movements across the desert, Design International wanted to offer both a strong architectural statement and an imposing gate into an oasis of calm and tranquillity in the otherwise hectic pace of modern suburban Dubai. Inside, the mall features nature at its most exquisite, with five plazas that each resemble elements of an oasis.

Mr Padoa said, ‘Every project has its own story; each is unique. Silicon Mall has five dimensions. On top of the conventional three, it will have a fifth façade on its roof, accessible to the public, and it is a mall that stimulates your senses: it will set a new trend in food and beverage with integrated cooking classes, food events and gourmet clusters that will benefit from their proximity to Lulu’s Hypermarket food-chain. The project will also feature the first Imax theatre, as well as one of the largest fitness and wellness centres in the Emirates’.

This year, Design International is also one of the sponsors of the RLI Awards for the “Developers” category, rewarding the emerging best retail & leisure project, which is distinguished for its originality and innovation.
