So, you’ve gone through the schooling, and are working towards your big goal – opening your own architectural firm. For some, this step won’t be for them. But for others though, having their name on the door entrance, that means something.
Getting started with your own architecture firm isn’t always the easiest, but it is rewarding. As with starting any business, it will require a lot of hard work, dedication, and long hours from you until you can get the business off the ground.
Every step you take towards opening your architecture firm will be valuable for your future. Spend the time needed to master as many aspects as you can in your field, and you’ll be on the right path to opening your firm in no time.
Make Most of Your Internship
Your internship is a glimpse into the real world of architectures. It’s a chance to get hands-on experience, learn as much as you can, and throw yourself into every aspect of architecture. It’s a moment that you want to use wisely and absorb as much information as possible. All of this experience will become valuable when you go on your own.
Find and Appreciate a Mentor
You can learn tricks of the trade and new skills you may not get from school through a mentor. This mentor should be someone you value and who has been in this field for quite some time. They’ll be able to teach you real-life design and construction skills that you cannot learn o paper.
Not only that, but the right mentor can put you in contact with other professionals that can further your career. When it comes time for your mentor to retire, you may be the one next in line to take over.
So, appreciate all of the time you can spend with your mentor, and make sure to return the favor to someone later on.
Get Hands-on Experience
In the architecture field, hands-on experience means everything. Once you start building a house or furniture by hand, it’s a lot different than learning and designing on paper. As important it is to get all of your school, it is also important to get as much hands-on experience as possible.
As you get your experience, you’ll also start to learn what type of architecture you like best and are best at. You may have a knack for residential design rather than commercial design.
Enter Design Competitions
When starting out, you want to do as much as you can to build your portfolio and to get your name out into the world. Otherwise, it will be hard to get yourself going anywhere if you have nothing to show potential clients.
As you continue on with your training, find as many competitions to enter your designs in. The more you do, and better you get, the more people will notice you.
Learn the Business Side of Things
Opening your own architecture firm requires more than just your building and designing skills. You will also need to know how to run a business.
Do some research on being an entrepreneur and learn what to do and what not do when starting up a business. Look into business loans that will give you the required money to get your firm started. The more you can do to prepare yourself, the better off you’ll be.
