The architect’s house, museum and library has been a public museum since the early 19th century.

John demolished and rebuilt three houses in succession (1792 to 1824) on the north side of Lincoln’s Inn Fields, beginning with No. 12 and finishing with No. 14. No. 13 is the property entrance.

In 1833 Soane negotiated an Act of Parliament to preserve the house and collection.
