ALAN SHINGLER NEW CHAIR OF RIBA SUSTIANABLE FUTURES GROUP
RIBA have appointed Alan Shingler, head of sustainability at Sheppard Robson, as chair of the RIBA Sustainable Futures Group.
The designer of the UK’s first Code for Sustainable Homes Level 6, Zero Carbon Home, will seek to draw together the diverse knowledge & experience currently held within the 20 strong group.
Alan will encourage collaboration between construction industry disciplines currently actively partnering: engineers, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) CIBSE and the British Property Foundation (BPF).
“I feel incredibly privileged to be asked to chair this immensely experienced group. I believe the collective specialist design knowledge within the Futures Group is unparalleled.”
“My challenge is to channel this expertise to the benefit of the profession, influencing the construction industry, government & building user behaviour. We will start supporting Ruth Reed as president of the RIBA by focusing on:
“Existing Buildings and domestic and non domestic buildings in meeting the challenges ahead to address climate change mitigation and adaptation.
“Evidence Based Design, measurement, post occupancy feedback & transparent assessment so we can learn & improve building performance”
“We intend to use the RIBA’s Communities website as a portal providing an insight into the groups work & encourage debate amongst members.”
Another one of the group’s key roles is to respond to consultation papers. The group has recently released a response to Part L and Definition to Zero Carbon consultation papers, and are currently forming opinion on proposed changes to the Code for Sustainable Homes, the Code for Non-Domestic Buildings, Energy Performance Certificates and the Carbon Reduction Commitment.
Shingler joined Sheppard Robson in 1998 and started a sustainability group within the practice in 2000. Sheppard Robson were announced AJ100 Sustainable Practice 2009
