Contemporary Architecture in Scotland – architectural selection below:

Stirling Castle
The oldest Castle buildings date from around 1370. Stirling featured in ‘Braveheart’, starring Mel Gibson. Controversy about restoration works to the Castle emerged around 2000 with recreation of historical styles irritating some contemporary architects. The timber roof is well worth a visit in itself. The images of the great hall are from Cowco – Scottish timber craftsmen based in Angus.

Stirling Tolbooth
Stirling Tolbooth
The existing building forms a U-shape with court house occupying the central section and vaults underneath. It sits between the two main streets on the approach to the castle. As part of the design the adjacent Jail Wynd was pedestrianised and a new entrance created using one of the original vaults.

Stirling is a city in central Scotland. The market town, surrounded by rich farmland, grew up connecting the royal citadel, the medieval old town with its merchants and tradesmen, the bridge and the port. Located on the River Forth, Stirling is the administrative centre for the Stirling council area, and is traditionally the county town of Stirlingshire. Proverbially it is the strategically important “Gateway to the Highlands”.

Perth City Hall Building Renovation
Mecanoo envisions the project as means to create a new gateway to Perth; to its history and its pride. The scheme proposal seeks to re-activate Perth City Hall by a number of ‘light touch’ interventions that embrace the building’s beauty and character, whilst improving accessibility and reinforcing existing connections.
