Scottish Housing Shortfall

Increase from existing 25,000 new houses per year to 35,000 demanded for Scotland. Communities & Sport Minister said the “current rate of new house building – almost 25,000 new houses last year – is simply inadequate”.

It’s essential the majority of this supply is located in dense developments on brownfield land; the planning system also requires immediate root & branch reform.

Scottish Housing – Background
Scottish housing stock generally varies from wee bungalows to sixties high rises; in the Highlands traditional crofts mingle with new properties which often look like they could be from anywhere ie non-indigenous. After the Second World War a massive housing construction commenced in Scotland (& across Europe) with slab blocks and tower blocks mostly located around the edges of the major cities such as Glasgow and Edinburgh, and in New Towns in the Central Belt such as Cumbernauld.

In the Seventies this major building programme stalled and low-scale dense
housing took its place, mainly built by private housing developers. Styling was generally regressive but in the Nineties some more contemporary Scottish housing emerged. Notable were the Homes for the Future scheme in Glasgow and the Slateford Green housing in Edinburgh. One-off houses such as those by Richard Murphy also encouraged a shift in thinking towards contemporary architecture.
