In december 2012 Manchester council tried to block plans for a multi-million pound supermarket in Salford. The store – which would have a ‘meadow’ of grass and wildflowers on its roof – would be built along with 40 new homes by the River Irwell in Blackfriars. The supermarket plans have been drawn up by developers SiSi Investments and Urban Splash. Celebrated local architect Ian Simpson, who designed the Hilton Manchester (Beetham Tower) and the Urbis building, came up with the blueprint for the site.
