Boston Harbor Garage towers proposal, Massachusetts, USA 2009- KPF - Kohn Pederson Fox Architects Boston Waterfront Development Proposal to replace the Boston Harbor Garage with three skyscrapers on the waterfront: $900 million tower project Developer : Don Chiofaro, Boston 1.5 million sqft mixed-use project: hotel, offices, retail, condominiums Location: between New England Aquarium and Boston Greenway Boston Harbor Garage Boston, MA The Boston Harbor Garage project aims to bring together the city’s historic harbor, financial district, New England Aquarium area, downtown district, and the newly opened Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway. The site’s location at the center of these attractions provides the opportunity to create a truly unique centerpiece for Boston Harbor in the form of two mixed-use towers. One tower will house a world class hotel and luxurious condominiums and align with the top of One International Place. The second tower will feature office space and align with the top of the historic Customs House Tower. The mass of Harbor Towers (neighboring buildings) and the two new proposed towers create a cluster of buildings, thus breaking down the scale of each tower. The glass towers are each wrapped in a rugged terra cotta frame. The glass facades of the buildings face outwards to the harbor and back to the city itself while the terra cotta frame merges the new buildings with their surroundings. The frame between the two buildings elevates the volume over the public realm, creating an arch which is on axis with the prestigious Common Wealth Avenue. The towers sit between a large glass public atrium with retail facilities that will connect the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway to the Boston Harbor. A below-grade parking structure will serve the needs of the tenants, workers and hotel guests that utilize the towers. When complete the Boston Harbor Garage project will weave together some of the city’s most important areas into one district that will attract people throughout the day and into the night to enjoy the numerous activities the area has to offer.
