Waltham headquarters recognized for new way of building, doing business

Cambridge, Ma – April 30, 2009 – Last night, Autodesk’s AEC Solutions Group Headquarters in Waltham, MA, was the recipient of an American Institute of Architects (AIA) Fifth Annual Technology in Architectural Practice Building Information Model (BIM) Award at the AIA’s National Convention in San
Francisco. The project was honored in the “Design/ Delivery Process Innovation Using BIM” category, recognizing the exemplary collaboration between
design team KlingStubbins, general contractor Tocci Building Companies, and owner Autodesk.

Autodesk challenged the KlingStubbins / Tocci Building Companies team to not only create a new 60,000-SF home for their AEC division in an exciting and expressive space, but also to reinvent the design and construction process with the progressive Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) agreement – one contract signed by the owner, architect, and contractor – enabled with the latest Autodesk BIM software. In this new space, Autodesk will develop, test, and market Revit and other BIM tools that were actually used to design and build the project.

“This project, New England’s first IPD, was a radical departure from the traditional way of designing and building,” said Phil Bernstein, FAIA, vice president of Autodesk AEC industry strategy and relations. “Working in partnership with KlingStubbins and Tocci Building Companies allowed us as the client, our architect, and our contractor to collaborate and focus on a set of outcomes that were in the best interest of the project, as opposed to being focused on their individual roles and responsibilities.”

The project’s adoption of the IPD agreement sets a new precedent for successful project implementation and encourages proactive collaboration between all parties to ensure design quality, construction quality, schedule, and budget.

The project is on track to receive LEED® Platinum Certification.
