Scheme design has been approved for a new Oncology Centre at the King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) in Bahrain. A team led by HASSELL, including Bahrain-based Mazen Alumran Consulting Engineers (MACE) and team members Aecom, Baker Willis Smith and MJ Medical, has completed the design for client the Bahrain Defence Force.

The new building will be designed to the highest international standards of healthcare provision, bringing first-class cancer care and research facilities to Bahrain in a ‘translational’ environment, where research advances are used to directly benefit patient care.

Incorporating the latest advances in technology, the new Oncology Centre will combine research functions with comprehensive in-patient, out-patient, diagnostic and treatment facilities. Its location on the existing KHUH site will ensure access to a wide range of healthcare services for all patients, while further treatment integration will include work with other hospitals in Bahrain. This holistic approach to healthcare provision in Bahrain is designed to establish a multi-disciplinary and effective care programme for all citizens.

The Oncology Centre will play a leading role in the worldwide development of radiation oncology. Bahrain’s location at the centre of the Arabian Gulf, neighboured by Qatar and Saudi Arabia (to which it is connected via the King Fahd Causeway), will be critical to achieving national and internationally coordinated clinical trials to improve medical knowledge beyond borders and contribute to the worldwide fight against cancer.

The KHUH project builds on HASSELL’s international healthcare experience, such as the 2,700m2 Lismore Cancer Care Centre and the 140,000m2 Fiona Stanley Hospital in Australia. The practice has previously designed general and specialist hospitals, as well as research facilities such as the award-winning 50,000m2 Eco Sciences Precinct in Brisbane.

Colin Hockley, Managing Principal for HASSELL in the UK, commented:
“Bahrain is working to lead the region in developing first-class healthcare and specialised cancer-care. HASSELL is looking forward to cooperating with the Bahrain Defence Force in achieving this goal through our research based approach to healthcare design, focusing on delivering high performing clinical spaces and environments for patients, visitors and staff which promote health and wellbeing.”

This was a single family home which we designed in an upmarket locality of Bahrain called Amwaj Island. The Clients wanted modern architecture and well defined interior areas and high in design value with as less of decoration as possible. The architecture practice planned the home on 3 levels, the lower to have the lounges/dining/kitchen and no beds at all.
