Karlsruhe, November 18th, 2021 – Lina Ghotmeh is a wanderer between Europe and the Middle East. She grew up in Beirut, where she studied at the American University. She was shaped by the time in Lebanon shortly after the civil war.

In her methodology as an architect, she advocates an “archeology of the future” as precisely as possible as the starting point for every project. She understands this to mean analyzing what already exists, checking it for its – even painful – meanings + then relinking these with the social and political reality of life on site. Ghotmeh combines this translation service with a strong architectural concept.

“If you are building today, it is of vital importance to understand that you necessarily always find yourself in a system of relationships”. This is the credo of the architect Lina Ghotmeh, who speaks out in this debate with committed statements, with her buildings and in the context of her teaching.

Lina Ghotmeh is involved in the debate about the future of the city with her office. This includes their “Réalimenter Massena” project, which, as a multifunctional hub, is to become part of the ecological transformation of the Parisian metropolis.

The Spanish architecture office TEd’A Arquitectes, Mallorca and the Chinese architecture office Xu Tiantian / DnA Design and Architecture, Beijing were also nominated.

ITOHAN OSAYIMWESE, Providence / USA received the prize for architectural theory.

Itohan Osayimwese is a professor of architectural history at Brown University, Providence / USA and works on theories of modernity from the perspective of postcoloniality and globalization. Her focus here includes „The Other History of Modern Architecture“ and a material culture history of the African diaspora.

In her research, Itohan Osayimwese is particularly concerned with German colonial architecture. With her widely acclaimed book „Colonialism and Modern Architecture in Germany (2017), in contrast to the somewhat short-lived and sometimes superficial debate following Bénédicte Savoys report „The Restitution of African Cultural Heritage. Toward a New Relational Ethics“ – has laid a solid foundation for architectural history, on which an equally solid discourse could now be built.
