Speirs and Major Associates - Awards Announcement: Lighting Awards 26 Aug 2008 International lighting architects Speirs and Major Associates have continued their success with a remarkable set of wins at two major lighting design award ceremonies. With seven wins in total, the fi ve newly honoured projects demonstrate the full range of creative skills they are able to bring to their projects. ‘International acclaim…’ The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) Awards are widely regarded as the lighting design community’s equivalent of the Oscars. This year, the 25th anniversary awards were announced at a glittering black tie event in Las Vegas, USA at the beginning of June. Over 160 entries from all over the world were judged by eminent lighting designers. The judges honoured eight lighting projects with Awards of Excellence and of these three were designed by Speirs and Major Associates: • The re-lighting of the interior of St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, UK (Martin Stancliffe) • Barajas International Airport, Madrid, Spain (Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners) • The Sackler Crossing, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK (John Pawson) Also, Thermae, Bath Spa, UK (Grimshaw) won one of only four Awards of Merit presented. Every year the highest scoring project is further honoured and is given the IALD’s prestigious Radiance Award. This year the IALD Radiance Award was presented to Speirs and Major Associates for the artificial lighting design for Barajas International Airport’s new terminal. ‘Best lighting design project 2008…’ The Middle East Lighting Design Awards (MELDA) recognise best quality lighting design throughout the middle east region. At this year’s MELDA awards the interior lighting for the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Mosque, Abu Dhabi, UAE (the third largest Mosque in the world) won the Best Public Building Award. It was further honoured by the judges and was awarded the overall Best Lighting Design Project of 2008.
