MY CHAIR – design competition

Even though the function of a chair as an aid to sitting has not really changed over time, its design has evolved in parallel to society. It has reflected the developments in technology, architecture, and industrial design. During the XX Century there were some chair designs that succeeded to reflect the society of their time. Some of the best known examples are Charles and Ray Eames' molded plywood chairs, Alvar Alto's No. 41 Chair or Marcel Breuer's B3 Chair. This is an open competition to design a chair, sofa, or stool that reflects our time.

Canadian Design Ideas Competition
Registration + Submission Deadline was 16 Jan 2006
Fernbrook Homes and Cityzen Development Group are pleased to sponsor a design ideas competition for a landmark building, expected to achieve a prominent height ranging between 50 and 60 floors, as part of the fourth phase of the Absolute development in the City of Mississauga, the second largest city in the Greater Toronto Area. The competition is intended to further develop the urban planning vision of the Mississauga City Centre. The objective is to create an ensemble of high quality buildings that contribute to the ongoing evolution of the Mississauga City Centre, and the establishment of a strong residential neighbourhood.

Through the architecture competition we seek fresh and creative ideas, and ultimately to select an architect to fulfill our vision. Fernbrook's Absolute community stands at the very crossroads of Mississauga, and because of its high profile location, this new building will be an icon representing not only the immediate neighbourhood, but also the entire Mississauga City Centre. The high-rise building must also complement the community of Absolute and provide a successful living environment for its residents.

Phase 2 – A Limited Architectural Design Competition – to ensure the best design possible. An invitation to compete was extended to a select number of participants identified through the Design Ideas Competition. Information on this Architecture Competition contact: info@yourabsolute.com

Awards PR from Architecture Competitions Scotland:-
Best Building in Scotland Award
Scottish Design Awards

Sutherland & Hussey Architects argued the case for Scottish architectural
design competitions in Sep 2004 with responses in the Press from the RIAS
and Colin Gordon. There are few Open Architecture Competitions in Scotland
with most being Invited Architecture Competitions ie glittering shortlist
normally with just a few Scottish practices. The Architecture Policy Unit
of the Scottish Executive is reportedly interested in this area.

The RIAS are currently working on an Advisory Manual for Architectural
Competitions in conjunction with the Scottish Architecture Policy Unit
which they hope to publish shortly to encourage quality in the built
environment and assist in widening opportunities for architects to engage
in this process.
