Tadao Ando – Architect
1941-

He was born in Osaka, Japan and did not train as an architect, initially apparently working as a boxer!

In 1969-70 he established his architecture studio: Tadao Ando Architect & Associates

Winner of RIBA Gold Medal 1997

Key architecture award: AIA Gold Medal, 2002
The AIA Gold Medal is awarded by the American Institute of Architects conferred “by the national AIA Board of Directors in recognition of a significant body of work of lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture.” It is the Institute’s highest award. Since 1947, the medal has been awarded more-or-less annually.
