Old Market Library Bangkok

The Old Market Library is built in a 100-year-old market building. The section for the library measures 3×9 metres internally, with a back yard facing a small canal. The roof and the walls were in very poor condition, and consequently any new element had to be self-supporting.

One of the main challenges for the community is the annual flooding during the rainy season. In this period the water can raise to around 50cm above floor level. Retaining the water would be very challenging and the solution was to elevate the calmer zones above the maximum flood level. This ensured that the library was usable throughout the flooded period. Because of the height of the ceiling in the main room, there was an opportunity to construct an intimate loft space. The library is divided into two zones along its length; one side lets you move through the building along the bookshelves, while the other side is for reading and other passive activities.

Beyond the main room is a smaller space, the study. An old toilet in the corner was removed and has become a home for a small tree, which hopefully will have good fertilization in the years to come. In the back yard a pergola was constructed to protect against the blazing sun.

In this project it was important for us to use local and reused materials, which were already available to the community. The bookshelves are made of wooden boxes from one of CASE’s earlier projects, while the cladding was assembled using old and decayed wooden pieces found in the immediate surroundings. The internal structure demanded a higher quality wood that had to be trusted to take the specific loads and span certain distances. These materials were bought at the local second hand wood shop.

The commercial centre of the Min Buri Market had already moved across the canal due to a fire in the late nineties. As the years have past by the community has diminished from a lively origo into an almost slum-like area. The land rights are uncertain and partly because of this the inhabitants are reluctant to invest in their homes.

For this project to be successful it was important to involve the inhabitants actively throughout the whole process, from inception to completion. Initially we mapped the needs within the community by holding regular meetings. These meeting ranged from drawing and building models, to even clearing garbage. As part of a survey we interviewed people in the area about their views on the community, its past, present and future. Aside from introducing ourselves to the community we wanted a deeper understanding of the situation that they lived in.

It wasn’t always easy getting everyone involved, especially the adults. However when the project became more tangible this completely changed. We soon had a regular group that worked with us every day. They began to develop an attachment to the library, a sense of achievement and pride; something we feel was a premise for the library to function in the long-term.

For TYIN, this project wasn’t only about the refurbishment of the old Market Library; it was also to strengthen the passion in the neighbourhood. The refurbishment was a demonstration of what can be achieved by the inhabitants themselves, through own initiative, using local inexpensive materials and their own knowledge.

Prosjektbeskrivelse

Biblioteket i Min Buri er bygget i et 100 år gammelt markedsbygg i tegl. Seksjonen er på 3×9 meter, med en bakhage ut mot kanalen. Tak og vegger var i svært dårlig forfatning, så det var nødvendig at all ny konstruksjon støttet seg selv, uten å knytte seg til det gamle.

Takhøyden i hovedrommet ga mulighet til å bygge en hems, noe som gir en mer intim situasjon både over og under gulvdekket. I lengderetningen har bygget fått to soner; den ene siden er en bevegelsesakse langs bokhylleveggen, mens den andre er satt av til lesing og andre rolige aktiviteter.

Innenfor hovedrommet finner man et mindre rom, lesekroken. Et gammelt toalett i hjørnet er brukt til plantekasse for et ungt tre, som forhåpentligvis vil ha god gjødsling i årene fremover. I bakgården er det satt opp en pergola med spiletak for å beskytte mot Thailands sol, og det er plantet jasmin og klatreplanter i noen store krukker.

En stor utfordring for lokalsamfunnet er flomproblemene som oppstår hvert år under regntiden. I denne perioden kan vannet stige opp til 50 cm over gulvnivået. Det vil være vanskelig å holde disse vannmengdene ute, så løsningen vi valgte var å heve de rolige sonene, og lage en hems slik at det vil være mulig å bruke biblioteket også ved flom. Betongvanger og luftige sammenføyninger hindrer at trekonstruksjonene vil bli utsatt for fukt og råte.

Et av de viktigste prinsippene i prosjektet var bruken av lokale og gjenbrukte materialer.Bibliotekets bokhyller er laget av gamle trekasser fra et av CASE sine tidligere prosjekter, mens kledningen rundt dem er puslet sammen av gammelt trevirke som er funnet i byggets umiddelbare nærhet. Konstruktivt virke, gulvbord og spiler måtte ha noe høyere kvalitet, og ble derfor kjøpt hos en lokal bedrift som selger brukte materialer.

Min Buri Old Market var tidligere et viktig kommersielt senter for området, men etter en brann på slutten av 90-tallet har markeds-aktivitetene flyttet til det nye markedet påden andre siden av kanalen. De siste årenehar området gått fra å være et livlig midtpunkt, til sakte å bevege seg nærmere en slum-tilstand. Eiendomsforholdene her er sværtusikre og et privat firma sitter på leiekontrakten til grunnen. Delvis på grunn av detteer beboerne redde for å investere i husenesine og de gamle byggene forfaller. Menneskene i Old Market Community tilhører en stor gruppe mennesker kalt Urban Poor.

For TYIN er det ikke kun det å bygge et bibliotek som har vært viktig, men også at det som blir gjort har større ringvirkninger. Gjennom bruk av lokale, rimelige materialerhar vi forsøkt å vise at dette er noe beboerne i Min Buri kan gjøre av eget initiativ, med egne ressurser. Målet er at arbeidet med biblioteket skal engasjere beboerne og bidra til en positiv utvikling i lokalsamfunnet.

For å få gjennomført prosjektet var det viktig å få beboerne aktivt med i hele prosessen. Vi startet med å kartlegge lokalsamfunnets behov gjennom jevnlige møter. Møtene ble brukt til bl.a. tegning, rydding av søppel og modellbygging. I tillegg til å lære menneskene her å kjenne, ønsket vi å styrke bevisstheten rundt ønsker og problemstillinger i lokalsamfunnet.

Vi gjennomførte en rekke intervjuer hvor vi tok for oss beboernes oppfatning av områdets fortid, nåtid og fremtid. Disse intervjuene ga oss en større forståelse av den situasjonen menneskene her lever i.

Det er ikke alltid like lett å engasjere folk, spesielt ikke de voksne, men dette var noe som endret seg da prosjektet ble mer håndfast og reelt. Da byggingen var kommet godt igang hadde vi en fast gjeng som arbeidet sammen med oss hver dag. Gjennom denne prosessen fikk de en personlig tilknytning til biblioteket, noe som vi mener en forutsetning for at biblioteket skal fungere på sikt.
