Mole Architects and Gianni Botsford Architects have won approval to proceed on a large development in Taiwan, Hsinchu City, following the success of their masterplan and concept for a hillside resort. The developer clients have chosen the Mole/GBA scheme over 6 other designs by architects including Arup, John Heah, and Japanese firm KKS.

The 71,000 sqm development comprises a spa hotel, serviced apartments, and luxury villas, and is based on the concept of a walled hillside village, with narrow streets culminating in views over a central planted ravine. The design works with traditional Chinese notions of entry, subdivision of space, and south facing pavilions, all set within a series of courtyard buildings. Landscape is integrated into the urban village setting, with the ravine forming the central spine through the centre of the ‘village’, with views out at either end. Luxury villas of 1200sqm are designed for corporate use with south facing gardens and swimming pools cantilevered out over the western edge.

Mole and Gianni Botsford have collaborated on the design, alongside landscape architect Todd Longstaffe-Gowan.
