National Arts Centre in Ottawa: NAC Reopening

On Canada’s 150th Birthday, the National Arts Centre inaugurates a new building wing. Diamond Schmitt Architects has designed a new wing which switches the entrance to face the city. The NAC now connects directly to Confederation Square and Ottawa’s Parliamentary Precinct.

The design of the Heydar Aliyev Center establishes a continuous, fluid relationship between its surrounding plaza and the building’s interior. The plaza, as the ground surface; accessible to all as part of Baku’s urban fabric, rises to envelop an equally public interior space and define a sequence of event spaces dedicated to the collective celebration of contemporary and traditional Azeri culture.

An unorthodox new building for the Rockwell Group, inspired by Cedric Price’s Fun Palace. The project received a $75m gift from Michael Bloomberg. The six storey 18,500 sqm cultural centre will be encased in a 34m-high outer shell that can slide on rails to double the ground space.
