Tarragona Architecture : Historic Catalonian Buildings
Tarragona is a delightful city located on the Mediterranean not far from Barcelona.
The Roman ruins have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Within the town the key remains are the 2nd century ampitheatre which once staged gladiator fights and the remains of a 450m long circus. To the north of the city is a Roman aqueduct, the Ferreres Aqueduct.
Historic City Centre:

Tarragona – a quiet, medieval city centre
However this city on the Costa Dorada has much to offer other than Roman ruins. Set up above the sea there are wonderful views over the Med. The historic city centre is an enchanting warren of medieval streets, leading up the hill to the beautiful cathedral building.

The architecture of Tarragona offers a quiet alternative to the bustle of the Catalan capital, Barcleona.
One of the highlights of the city is the Balcón del Mediterráneo at the south end of the city’s main street, Rambla Nova. There is a delightful café here with Art Deco styling and plenty of outdoor seating where you can take in views of the Mediterranean whilst enjoying an iced coffee or cool glass of lemonade.

Further up the Rambla Nova is the Foro de la Colonia, the Provincial Forum and the National Archaeological Museum.

Via Augusta Building – rest area, a subtle public space in a slither of land that is hard to develop, geat views of the sea and a welcome rest on the way up the hill
Tarragona Buildings seen from the beach
The beach is well worth a visit. It is a sharp descent down from the town and forms a gracious sandy curve around the bay. There are changing facilities and if you get hungry there are snack bars and ice cream stalls.
Meson del Mar Building, Seafront – cafe by the marina
Tarragona Beach Building – good articulation of wooden ‘pods’ popping out below a concrete superstructure but wood has weathered badly which leaves the architecture looking cheap

Architecture Tours of Barcelona
Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and most famous for Antoni Gaudi.
His key buildings are Sagrada Familia, Casa Mila and Casa Batlo. It is also home to the sublime Barcelona Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe. But more recently Barcelona staged the Olympics and the city gained many strong new buildings. Contemporary Catalan Buildings by Miralles, Herzog & De Meuron, Gehry, Ito, Foster and Rogers to name a few adorn the city.
Our Barcelona Architecture Tours typically last 3 to 4 hours but can sometimes stretch over a number of days.
Barcelona Architecture Tours can focus on traditional buildings, contemporary buildings or both. The Barcelona Architecture Tour can be an introduction to the city’s main buildings or can be tailored to your group’s interests.
