The Piazza
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Multiple Residence
INSPIRATION:
The Piazza is an intimate residential area. It draws its inspiration from the way Mediterranean cities have evolved over time to become places of character, and reinterprets the resulting communal feeling into a modern neighborhood. It favors a relaxed informality to its urbanism, an approach echoed in low-rise buildings, not just displaying affinity to each other, but often connected with bridging terraces.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Piazza is comprised of a collection of harmonious structures, made up of individual buildings each reflecting its own identity. The site is an almost perfect rectangle and the natural breaks form a route that would thread through the site and connect to the city. Reciprocally, Jeddah’s urban spirit influenced The Piazza to carry three district layers: a street level of shops, lanes and gardens, a middle layer of well-planned apartments and a top layer of villas and terraces.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
While being an intimate residential area, The Piazza is also an open gate community which favors pedestrians to a great extent and draws people casually through open piazzas and terraces into a gallery of retail outlets.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Reinforced Steel Concrete Structure Paint & Plaster finishing Mechanical stone cladded walls over concrete masonry units Aluminum framed windows with 24mm hermetically sealed with structural double glazed silicone. Exposed surfaces with Modified Bituminous Membrane Roofing
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The site is in a 6674 m2 plot, located in the very heart of Jeddah, only meters away from King Fahad Hospital and from the strategic road Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah.

The Piazza is an intimate residential area. It draws its inspiration from the way Mediterranean cities have evolved over time to become places of character, and reinterprets the resulting communal feeling into a modern neighborhood. It favors a relaxed informality to its urban feel, an approach echoed in low-rise buildings, not just displaying affinity to each other, but often connected with bridging terraces.
CHALLENGE:
The main challenge was to create a sense of privacy in an urban residential compound while keeping the public access to the ground level of commerce, altogether striving to attain a homey identity amidst the urban chaos that has been ruling the city lately.
