Hannah Martin Jewellery Show – London Fashion Week
Hannah Martin launches an exceptional design collaboration with TDO Architecture and DuPont™ Corian® at London Fashion Week AW13
February 2013 – Jewellery designer Hannah Martin’s first ever collaboration with an architect was unveiled in the form of intricate and dramatic display plinths made from DuPont™ Corian® high-tech surface at London Fashion Week AW13, where Hannah participated in the Palladium sponsored ‘Rock Vault’ from February 15th-19th at Somerset House.
Hannah Martin says: “I am thrilled to have collaborated with TDO architecture studio and DuPont™ Corian® at this exciting time for London: As always, I love to be able to bridge the gap between London Fashion Week and London Design Week – this brings us even closer together.”
A regular in the worlds of jewellery, fashion and design, Hannah Martin’s work is widely recognised both for its masculine elegance and for its architectural references, so this project was a natural partnership. Inspired by the fictional muses behind Hannah Martin’s collections, TDO explored the distinctive cinematography of 1950’s Film Noir as a key aesthetic concept.
Seeking to evoke Hannah’s creative influences, the display plinths made from DuPont™ Corian® borrow from visual techniques used in Film Noir cinema: Stepped levels emphasise and exaggerate the use of light, which gives depth and drama to the surface, whilst lighting arrangements are directed to express the characters behind the jewellery pieces.
The collaboration investigates the convergent signature of shapes that both Hannah Martin and TDO explore through their work. The resultant form is a composite of pyramids and circles forming ‘amphitheatre style stages’ that are visible from all sides. The natural choice of material with which to realise this vision, DuPont™ Corian® high-tech surface enables these forms to be created as it can be fabricated into almost any conceivable shape. The legs of the plinths, which are designed to be easily dismantled for re-use in other situations are connected with steel tube and capped with leather upholstery in finest Italian calfskin.
Hannah Martin comments on the plinth design: “Architecture is one of my key influences, so we found a natural dialogue between my jewellery and the incredible skill set of TDO. The challenges of displaying and lighting my collections within larger-scale environments, where the ambient light is difficult to control, resulted in the simple forms of a triangle and circle intercepting to create the light-controlled environment within that space. DuPont™ Corian® swiftly became fundamental in the process of realising the design, it was our first choice of material in order to make the structures both monolithic and precise.
We were thrilled with the expert craftsmanship available in fabricating the material to a high quality finish, and the team worked tirelessly to produce the plinths in the intended format. We have worked with the amazing in-house technical team for DuPont™ Corian® previously and we cannot speak highly enough about them and about this ultra-versatile material, which for me is the best available and which absolutely enhances the tactile and luxurious qualities of my work.”
Philip Hutfield, Design & Technical Consultant for DuPont™ Corian® in the UK, who was ‘hands-on’ in realising the plinths comments, “Working with Hannah and TDO was a great experience, the architectural nature of the designs and the delicate detail intended to enhance the jewellery and lighting effects was an exciting but satisfying challenge, one that we knew DuPont™ Corian® would achieve beautifully. The deep black Nocturne colour chosen has a sleek, sophisticated mystery that makes an ideal backdrop to high-fashion, luxury collections or for impact on larger scale installations.”
Douglas Hodgson of TDO adds, “We’ve been long time admirers of Hannah Martin’s work, so were delighted to be invited to work on this exciting collaboration. We are fascinated by the potential in the materiality of DuPont™ Corian® high tech surface; a sheet material that can be manipulated with precision into 3D forms, true to the design.”
