Old St. Paul’s is a former cathedral in the Diocese of Wellington of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. It is an example of 19th-century Gothic Revival architecture adapted to colonial conditions and materials. It is at 34 Mulgrave Street, close to the New Zealand Parliament.

The site of the church was purchased by Bishop Selwyn in 1845. Agreement to build the church was reached by 1861 and the Reverend Frederick Thatcher, then vicar of St. Paul’s, Thorndon, was engaged as the architect.

Wellington Cathedral New St Pauls Church

St Paul’s Cathedral, Wellington is the cathedral church of the Anglican Diocese of Wellington and the seat of its bishop of Wellington. Work began in 1955, and was completed in 1998. It was constructed in reinforced concrete due to the effects of the 1931 Napier earthquake.

Cecil Wood, appointed by the Wellington Diocese as the architect of the new cathedral in 1938, designed the building. He died in 1947 and never lived to see the Cathedral construction begin.

Cecil Wood had travelled and worked overseas, studying Stockholm Town Hall, the Art Deco architecture of Southern California, and the Westminster Roman Catholic Cathedral in London.
