Hobson Bay House, Auckland

The living areas, sky deck and main bedroom are located on the upper floor to take in the panoramic harbour views. The upper level functions as a semi independent apartment for the parents, while the ground floor level has two bedrooms for the teenage sons, a living area and kitchenette, as well as garaging.

New Zealand home, Coromandel
This property takes the form of two fanning wings linked by a stained glass entry creating a central garden courtyard that is protected from sea breezes and orientated towards the afternoon sun. The home is an elaboration on the theme of the New Zealand ‘Bach’ with it’s mono-pitch roof, black cladding and large verandahs.

The highly innovative building is a rich, groundbreaking and thrilling tour de force. Its towers of stacked boxes have a restless, sculptural quality and the raw, muscular materials harmonise perfectly with the inner city context.

Len Lye Centre, New Plymouth

Len Lye Centre
The Len Lye Centre will be a new home for the care, research, preservation and engagement with the art and ideas of pioneer New Zealand-born modernist filmmaker and kinetic artist Len Lye (1901-80). The Len Lye Collection and Archive has been cared for and exhibited by the Govett-Brewster since it was gifted by the artist to the Len Lye Foundation ‘for the people of New Zealand’ in 1980.

Lower Hatea River Crossing

Work began this week on the construction of the Lower Hatea River Crossing in Whangarei, New Zealand with a Maori blessing of the site. The NZ $29m (US $22m) project is part of a package to address congestion in the main city in Northland.

The programme for this house seeks to create a sense of belonging for a couple through the construction of a sense of place common to both Hunter and Bird. Its concept explores the reconciliation of two ideas as relating to birds; a nest and a hide.

The Michael Hill Clubhouse, South Island

Hunkered into the earth, The Michael Hill Clubhouse seeks to integrate and intensify the experience of golf with the landscape. The design seeks an impression of form having evolved from the same forces that shape the land.

The brief for ACCOR Hospitality’s new twelve level, 4 star, 263-key Novotel hotel at Auckland International Airport called for a significant new landmark with an unmistakably ‘New Zealand’ identity.
