The 4th Annual Meatpacking District Design Week
Polshek Partnership Architects is proud to showcase its work as part of this year’s exciting event expected to bring 10,000 people to the Meatpacking District. With Architecture as its theme, MPD Design 09 features an extensive series of exhibitions, discussions, gatherings and tours that spotlight the creative projects and architects who work in the area.
May 14-17, 2009 (Meatpacking District) – MPD Design 09 celebrates the Meatpacking District and its identity as one of the city’s most trend-setting neighborhoods and vibrant centers of creative design. Polshek Partnership Architects has been a prominent presence here for 25 years and has recently transformed the local skyline with its award-winning Standard Hotel.
Serving as the activities hub for Design 09 is The 414 Gallery, located at 414-418 West 14th Street. Open from 11:00am – 8:00pm throughout the weekend, this pop-up gallery features the work of international designers and world-renowned architects who work in the Meatpacking District. As part of an exhibit sponsored by Architect’s Newspaper, Polshek Partnership Architects is presenting The Standard Pixelized. Six thousand photographs of the firm’s hundreds of buildings resolve into a 23′ x 10′ x 10′ image of the Standard Hotel. Computer monitors display diagrams, renderings and graphics that the firm employs to communicate architectural ideas.
In a district made up primarily of two-story 19th- and 20th-century industrial buildings and manufacturing lofts, Todd Schliemann of Polshek Partnership Architects has designed the Standard Hotel, a glass and concrete hotel rising eighteen stories. Elevated fifty-seven feet above the street and straddling the High Line, an abandoned section of an historic elevated railroad line being developed as a new linear, public park, the Standard is a stunning architectural landmark that contributes to the rich texture of the Meatpacking District. The Standard serves as the Welcome Center for MPD Design 09. From 11:00 am – 6:00 pm, May 14-17, guests are invited to the Standard’s outdoor plaza, located at 848 Washington Street, between West 13th and Little West 12th Street, where they can pick up their guide to exploring the exciting events and exhibits taking place throughout the neighborhood.
