As an antidote to the anti-climate-change direction of US presidential politics e-architect will feature an inspirational green project at least once a week.

I was reading Leo Hollis’ book ‘Cities Are Good For You’ and came across reference to Brooklyn Grange. I recall seeing images of this before and it is more about society, community and gardening than architecture per se, nevertheless as an architect I find the roof farming concept interesting and a positive direction for humankind.

Brooklyn Grange Farm building

The flagship farm on Northern Boulevard sits on a building erected in 1919: the “43,000 sq ft behemoth is built like a rock, with a solid concrete slab roof and enough rebar to withstand three times the load of our 10″ of rooflite soil and plants. Located just over the 39th St bridge on the Astoria side of Long Island City”.

DXA’s version of the Great Bridge envisions a future that elevates people over automobiles, reclaims land entangled by roads and ramps for civic use in the form of parks, museums, local commerce, recreation and housing, and makes the bridge more accessible to adjacent communities.
