The recently opened Le Central food hall reunites 25 local gastronomic icons, and has become a must-see in the creative and diverse city of Montreal. The Super Quality brings an East Asian cuisine to this gourmet mix with its authentic dishes from Southern India.
This is MRDK’s second project with Le Super Qualité, after having designing its flagship restaurant in Montreal’s Villeray neighborhood in 2016. The brief was to design a kiosk that would be a contemporary take on something authentically Indian, but with a completely different pallet than the flagship. The use of a similar design approach and style enables the two spaces to harmonize despite their differences.
Moodboard:
The design direction became very clear after learning that Mumbai has the second largest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the world after Miami. Inspiration was drawn from Art Deco’s rounded forms, contrasting colours, and ornamentation. The Super Qualité kiosk appears as if it has reappropriated one of these old Mumbai buildings transforming it into a streetside snack bar.
The kiosk is wrapped in corrugated steel siding that is hand-painted a bright yellow to quickly capture the attention of the many visitors of the food hall. A long stainless steel bar can host nearly a dozen customers on custom bar stools cantilevering off the stepping foot rest. Ordering is done through an opening in metal bars, reminiscent of the liquor stores in Eastern Asia. Suspended over the bar are tiffin containers repurposed as pendant lights, a design element that unifies the restaurant’s two locations.

Situé en plein cœur du quartier des spectacles et réunissant 25 icones de la gastronomie montréalaise, Le Central s’impose comme un incontournable de la créativité et diversité de la ville. Le Super Qualité s’inscrit à merveille dans cette halle gourmande avec ses plats de spécialité du sud de l’Inde.
Le Super Qualité est le deuxième projet réalisé par MRDK dans Le Central et le second établissement du populaire restaurant dans la métropole. En faisant des recherches sur l’histoire architecturale de la ville de Bombay, nous avons été surpris de constater que la mégapole renfermait la plus grande concentration de bâtiments Art déco au monde, après Miami.
Inspiré par les formes arrondies, les couleurs contrastantes, les ornementations et de ce courant architectural, Le Super Qualité semble avoir été tronqué d’un de ces nombreux bâtiments bombayites existents, pour ensuite être transformé en snack bar. Le jaune éclatant du kiosque, appliqué au pinceau sur une simple tôle corruguée, capte rapidement l’œil des nombreux usagés de Le Central avides de bouffe indienne.
Le long comptoir en acier inox accueille près d’une douzaine de tabourets faits sur mesure attachés en décalés sur l’appui pied massif, créant un effet de quinconce intéressant. L’idée des tiffins modifiés en suspension au dessus du comptoir a été reprise du premier super qualité réalisé par MRDK en 2016. Des grillages d’acier aux motifs très graphiques ont été conçus et installés de part et d’autre du kiosque, servant notamment de support pour le menu et pour y accrocher diverses ornementations typiquement indiennes.
Le Super Qualité Central permet d’apprécier le charme et la délicatesse de l’architecture Art Déco dans un contexte des plus convivial et décontracté qu’offre la bouffe de rue.
