The UCL Cancer Institute: Paul O’Gorman Building officially opens on 18th September. The second of three buildings Grimshaw is designing for UCL, the Institute will provide state-of-the-art laboratory space for 350 scientists, at the heart of one of the largest biomedical facilities in Europe. Internally, the layout follows a new approach to the design of research laboratories by separating the practical laboratory from the write-up area to create a distinct space for analysing and sharing information.

Grimshaw’s design links a Grade II listed building – housing the Graduate Medical School – with the high specification new build Institute. The main entrance is located at the juncture between the two and glazed with a single glass sheet. This sheer span reveals a highly engineered staircase that provides the main circulation core and an architectural focal point. The transparency of this circulation area articulates it as an open, shared space that is visually accessible from the street. As the Director of the Institute, Professor Chris Boshoff commented; “This building does something exciting by opening up an often opaque and private area of study.”
