29 Aug 2012

St James Theatre, Westminster

The St James Theatre is the first newly built theatre in London’s West End for 30 years and will open its doors to the public on 18th September 2012.

Design: Foster Wilson Architects ; new apartment building design: Loates Taylor Shannon

The new theatre designed by Foster Wilson Architects has been built on the site of the old Westminster Theatre, which was destroyed by fire in 2002. The Theatre Complex includes a new 312 seat auditorium as well as a 100 seat studio theatre, bar and restaurant. Above the St James Theatre is a new apartment building, designed by Loates Taylor Shannon with interiors designed in conjunction with Nicky Haslam.

The main theatre auditorium is lined with fumed oak timber panelling and has recessed lighting to create an intimate and atmospheric space for drama. The studio theatre has a flexible stage, bar and lounge seating and has been designed as a relaxed and comfortable venue for live music, comedy and drama.

The St James Theatre bar and restaurant has been furnished by Designed Interiors with a spectacular new staircase designed by the artist Mark Humphrey and hand crafted in Italy using Pietra Santa marble. The theatre’s creative team headed by Robert Mackintosh and David Gilmore has an ambitious artistic programme to develop theatre for the West end using a small and intimate space that has been purpose built for contemporary drama.
