David Chipperfield Exhibition in London
‘David Chipperfield Architects: Two Projects’ at the Royal Academy, London
A brand new image of David Chipperfield Architects’ The Hepworth Wakefield art gallery project will be displayed in the Royal Academy’s Architecture Space from 7 November 2008 – 11 January 2009.
A single giant print will cover the entire exhibition wall.
On a second panel, plans, sections, and renderings of the project will be placed alongside those of the Turner Contemporary gallery in Margate – another of David Chipperfield Architects’ current UK projects.
The Hepworth Wakefield will house a unique collection of original plasters and sculptures by Barbara Hepworth, alongside a collection of major British and European artists, and a programme of ambitious large-scale contemporary art exhibitions. The new Turner Contemporary gallery will celebrate Margate’s association with the English painter JMW Turner, presenting both historic and contemporary exhibitions as well as a programme of educational and cultural events.
Both projects are designed partly in response to their proximity to water – The Hepworth Wakefield is on the banks of the River Calder, and the Turner Contemporary is on the North Kent coast. The designs also both reference the local vernacular – The Hepworth Wakefield’s conglomeration of differently sized trapezoidal blocks refers to the scale and rooflines of the surrounding industrial buildings, while the Turner Contemporary’s six identical volumes with mono-pitched roofs invoke a traditional coastal silhouette.
The exhibition will run from the 7 Nov 2008 – 11 Jan 2009
