The Redevelopment of Paddington Central is set to be completed
The final part of the £600m redevelopment of Paddington, one of the largest urban development projects in Europe, was given the go-ahead after the final remaining office buildings were granted planning permission by Westminster City Council.
The Paddington Central area looks be finished with two new offices on the western side of the site which comprise of a 10 storey block at Four Kingdom Street and a 13 storey tower at Five Kingdom Street.
The buildings will be added to Paddington Central, which set around Sheldon Square comprises of a terraced amphitheatre, a gym, cafés, bars and restaurants, office accommodation and two residential blocks providing over 200 apartments including affordable housing and the Novotel London Paddington, a 206 bedroom hotel.
Made from glass and aluminium the last two buildings will contain 41, 797 m2 of office space and will be located next to the Novotel Hotel in an area which is currently vacant.
To the West is the Grade II listed Westbourne Bridge and to the North East the Grade II listed buildings at 179 Harrow Road which were formally the Paddington British Rail Maintenance Depot buildings.
A new garden square comprising of a series of garden ‘rooms’ featuring fountains, trees and seating will also be created between the two buildings where people will be able to sit and relax.
Cllr Alastair Moss, chairman of Westminster City Council’s Planning and City Development Committee, said: ”Westminster is eager to see these plans brought to fruition as they will bring huge social and financial benefits to the community in Paddington and should cement its standing as an attractive residential and office location.
“We are keen to see this project completed because redeveloping the site will not only play an important part of the regeneration of Paddington but will also create more private and affordable housing and stimulate local jobs and businesses which will help transform Paddington into a thriving residential and commercial centre.
“Eventually this area should create in the region of 30 000 jobs and we hope that the completion of the refurbishment of Paddington will continue to appeal to major investors who will hopefully come here and create more jobs for local people.”
The entire Paddington Central scheme covers 160,000sq m, and. along with Paddington Basin, once complete the redevelopment of the Paddington Special Policy Area will provide approximately 600 residential units and business space, incorporating a healthy balance between private and affordable housing, office, retail, public and private open space and community facilities within an exemplary sustainable development.
The scheme is the final part of the £600 million development which was granted outline planning by Westminster City Council back in 2000.
