Lavington Street

Design: Allies and Morrison

A £23m mixed-used development on the corner of Lavington Street and Great Suffolk Street in Southwark, London, has just started construction. Designed by Allies and Morrison for the UNITE Group, the UK’s leading developer and manager of student accommodation, the 14,021m² (gross external area) scheme provides accommodation for 230 students studying in the area, as well as 4,056m² of office and retail space.

Arranged with a choice of flats and studios, the student accommodation will be housed across two buildings – a six-storey block fronting Great Suffolk Street and a 13-storey tower set back behind the perimeter buildings. Communal facilities include a common room, landscaped courtyard, and a roof top terrace with an adjacent lounge area. Offices will be located in a separate six-storey block with its main entrance on Lavington Street.

The overall massing of the development is defined by three distinct buildings. Through the façade design, which features a combination of fair faced brick work and aluminium rainscreen cladding, both the urban scale and the detail in relation to street level and the wider context ensure that they fit in well with surrounding area.

The development is due for completion in time for the new academic year 2010.
